Safety Recall

August 5, 2008

Baby Appleseed is recalling first generation Davenport cribs (manufactured on or before August 2007) due to a potential safety hazard when used in the lowest position. We are asking consumers who own this crib to contact us for a kit to fix this potential hazard. Consumers can easily contact us to have the replacement kit sent to them at no charge.

What is this safety recall about?
This recall is for first generation Davenport cribs that were manufactured on or before August 2007. All other Davenport cribs are NOT affected.

The first generation Davenport crib has two mattress supports – one metal (for top and middle positions) and one wooden one (for lowest position and used for the toddler bed conversion). The wooden mattress support, when used in the crib at the lowest position, does not meet the federal minimum requirement of 26” from the top of the footboard to the top of the mattress support. The distance currently measures 25 1/8”. This safety recall affects about 500 cribs.

To fix this problem, a kit has been made that will replace the wooden mattress support bringing the crib into compliance when using the crib in its lowest position.

How do I know if the crib I have is affected?
The first generation Davenport crib can be identified by the following:

  • It has a two-mattress support system; one metal (for top and middle positions) and one wooden (for lowest and toddler bed conversion).
  • The model number begins with 273 and was manufactured on or before August 2007. This information can be found on a label located on the inner right panel or on the headboard of the crib.
If you have a Davenport crib that has only one mattress support, begins with the model numbers 244 and was manufactured after August 2007, then your crib is not affected and is safe to use. The replacement mattress support does not work on second generation Davenport cribs.

I have an affected crib, how do I get my replacement kit?
Please click here to access an on-line order form. Follow the instructions and fill it out in its entirety. Kits will be available late August. Most kits are sent out within 1-2 business days of receiving your submission once kits are in stock.

Can I still use my affected crib?
If you are using your crib in the top or middle positions, there is no need to do anything and you can continue to use the crib. Be sure to use the replacement kit once you are ready to go to the lowest position.

If you are currently using the crib in its lowest position, stop using the crib until you receive the replacement kit. If you are using the crib as a converted toddler bed, you may continue to use it and replace the mattress support once you receive the kit.

What do I do with the wooden mattress support once I receive my kit?
Please discard the wooden mattress support ONLY as it will be replaced by the kit. Do not discard the metal mattress support or the wooden cross rails as that is still used for the top and middle crib mattress positions.

Do I need to change the mattress support if I am using the crib in the top or middle positions?
No. You only need to use the replacement mattress support when you are ready to use the crib in its lowest position.

Are any of your new cribs affected by this recall?
No. This safety recall only affects our first generation of Davenports made August 2007 or earlier.
